All – too – much…

Ok now we really are in the thick of the season here at Bard. It always sems incomprehensible that the time could be in such short supply in the midst of long, countrified summer days. But beyond the regular scheduling things, there is the ever increasing committments that accrue to the process: for example this morning I have four appointments with music students. That means that over the last couple of days I have had to work my way through four cds of improvised music, with an ear towards discussing it with them. Similarly, I have around 150 pages of student poetry and prose to get through this weekend, while on Sunday the third year thesis show opens: mandatory attendance; last night was two hours of presentations by my fellow faculty after two hours of sculpture caucus after three hours of student meeting after a visiting artist presentation the night before after an opening for the faculty show, after finishing the pieces for the faculty show after three hours of student meetings after a three hour faculty meeting, and so on and so on.

Stimulating? Yes. Rewarding? At times. But a long, long grind as well.

    Good, yes but…..
For me personally this doesn’t always translate into fulfillment. I don’t always get good work or any work out of it. And then there is the sorrow of students who don’t get any better, year after year.

I know I have it good. but like any other american I like to grouse about my job occasionally.
