Christmas is coming….

Here are some of the groovy items I saw for sale at this weekend’s triple pier antique show. Budget restrictions (and a scarcity of truly overwhelming items) made me hold back, but there are some things that are fun to look at at least.

Calligraphy exercises at the Gold Goat booth.

Bust comemmorating a fabulous mustache.

Salesman cases with sample samsonite finishes – my fave? faux wood grain

Expressionist Popeye puppet. Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of the group of three handmade Popeye, Olive and Wimpy dolls at another booth.

One of my favorite things from the show (however overpriced, to my way of thinking). Nice that it is fun for boys and girls and also check out the pipe/revolver at the third row from the top. Why can’t kids play with stuff like that today?

  1. The bust comemmorating a fabulous mustache is REALLY awesome. I’d like to use it for an installation, if only I had access to it. It probably costs too much anyway.

  3. It’s in the booth of a dealer from PA, and is Terra cotta, so scarily fragile. But sometimes You can actually borrow stuff like that for exhibition. The dealers are glad to give the object some additional provenance.

  5. I have to say I’m lusting for that Popeye puppet…I seem to be in the throes of a “squinty” man fetish, recently…whatever that means.

However, gandering at the price tag…!

  7. Yes – breath taking. My friend Avram also lusts after it (he’s a big puppet enthusiast) but even though he’s an folk art dealer he thinks it’s really over priced. But the Triple pier show happens a couple of times a year and is well worth a visit. You see amzing things there. And now that the Modern is 20 bucks, 15 for two days admission seems like a real bargain.

  9. a long time ago I was working with some of the folks from Bread & Puppet Theater on a Mother Jones related project (go figure). I would never have admitted it at the time but the puppets actually gave me the crawling creeps. This Popeye one delivers that in spades *shudder*

  11. I have two light housings from parking lot lights that would be kewl to put that head inside of but, it’s probably too big. But, I will go hunting locally and see what I can find.

  15. This is too revealing… Mark and I went to the Modernism show at the Armory instead. Of course there was nothing there we could afford. But it sure was a delight to look at! I never think to take pictures…
