What the country really looks like….

I’m sick of the use of the red/blue states graphic everywhere. Here is a map, made by urso that shows how the states would look with each state’s color being a reflection of the popular vote rather than electoral votes.

Among other things, here is proof that urso is a graphics genius, if you needed any more convincing.

You may want to post this around the office some.

  1. interesting, there is a pretty even color across, with some darker patches in either direction, but fairly smooth nonetheless.

    This implies a country that overall was very evenly split, even in the central US….

  3. Nayland, Unfortunately those of us who have a color problems think the color separation should be more distinct (use a rainbow ?). As an example I can not tell the difference between California and Florida. Partly it is because I can’t put Florida up next to California. Maybe, I’m red blue confused. This should not be taken as a criticism of the map. Good work Urso. Mark

  5. Is your training in graphic design or cartography? These are lovely maps; they have a sort of elegance that I don’t usually see in the works of most geographers.
