More question month…

This time from 2fruition:

What is your most uncomfortable elementary-school memory, if you are comfortable sharing that?

The thing that immediately came to mind when I read this was a moment in the third grade. There was a kid who for some reason was teasing me continually. I don’t remember his name or his face. What I do rememebr is that this particular day I couldn’t bear his taunts anymore and on the stairway between classes I hit him. It must have been a couple of times and there was no fight. I just struck him twice and then was overcome with an immense feeling of shame. It’s a feeling that has stayed with me when ever I recall the event.

As stated before feel free to ask me questions this month and I’ll try to answer them.

  1. I had a similar experience in 7th grade – had enough of the spitballs thrown at me by this nasty twerp, so I clocked him on the side of the head as I walked out the classroom door. Then I booked it down the hall real fast. He never bothered me again. That’s the only time I’ve ever hit anyone other than a sibling.

Unfortunately, there was no shortage of kids like him or worse. Seventh grade was awful.

My most uncomfortable experience was also in junior high, but it’s too humiliating to share.

  3. It’s more of a general experience than a specific event. In Grade 7 and 8, a classmate for whom I really didn’t much care was constantly being harassed because he was very obviously gay. Given my sense of fair play, I felt obliged to defend him. Oddly, I never got labelled gay myself then or, really, until about Grade 11 or 12 – but it was still difficult. It didn’t help that he had a masochistic streak and would deliberately hit on jocks or irritate the school bully (a huge girl who had probably been left back about 2 or 3 years by then), and I wasn’t quite the behemoth I am now. Still, I felt I had to do it – but I still didn’t like doing it, and it made Grade 7 and 8 very stressful for me. 🙁

  5. Thanks for sharing that, Nayland.

I only have one time where I fought back from all of the dozens and dozens of times I was harassed growing up. For me, that moment tends to get drowned in the sea of all the other hurtful incidents.
