Art redeems everything…

It can be a lousy week, but I’m willing to pause pushing the nuclear annihilation button because today I got to read Ernie Pook’s Comeek. New York papers are so stupid: they’ve driven almost every good cartoonist away from their pages. Thank goddess there’s an on line feed. Also right now I’m using iTunes to listen to Morning Becomes Eclectic from KCRW, a west coast station, so I guess Apple is ok too.

But just because I’m feeling slightly mellow doesn’t mean that I’m without crabbiness. Let me say here and now that Calvin And Hobbes is overrated.

  1. Ernie Pook is fantastic. Fortunately, it runs every week in the Reader here in Chicago so I get to read it quite often. Until I move and I’m back to standbys like Andy Capp and Cathy which should lower my IQ a few points.

  2. Gene went to college in LA…he always talked about how great Morning Becomes Eclectic was…we went to LA a couple of years ago and I finally got to listen to that show. LOVE IT!

I used to recite a popular Pogo song as a child, which i *still* remember to this day:

Deck us all with Boston Charlie
    Walla Walla, Wash, and Kalamazoo!
    Nora’s freezin’ on the trolley…..

How wnderful! I never knew the carol caught on. Did you pick it up from the animated special? I’ve never seen it.

The strip sometimes ran a second carol

    Good King Sauerkraut looked out
    On the streets uneven…

  5. I wish Lynda’s books Down the Street and The Fun House were still in print. She’s my idol when it comes to capturing the subtleties of childhood inner life.
