To all my fellow academics:

(and I know there’s quite a few of you on my friends list”)

Are you all as desperate for the end of the semester as I am? and how many days do you have left?

For me, it’s two more weeks of teaching, and student stress.

  1. Yes, yes, yes!!!

Next week is the last week of classes at Brown, but that won’t ease the chaos. Commencement isn’t for another month. Goddard runs through 13 June…technically, we are in mid-terms now. It seems like it will never end!

    Calgon, take me away!

  2. I turned in final grade reports yesterday! I had three finals on Tuesday, calculated all my projects, final exams, extra credit, and filled in the forms. Now, on to some personal projects. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I’m in one of those departments in which we don’t have a lot of contact with the students or the academic calendar; basically the only way I can tell classes are over is that the parking deck is suddenly empty.

  4. Already done. Bag is in the car. I’m 2 miles from the airport – I get off work at 5, my flight leaves at 6:30.

I spent last night burning 34 CDs for various people.

  5. Re: Mentor?

I teach grad level – In the summer I teach Sculpture in a multidisciplinary MFA program, and the rest of the year I run an MFA program in “Advanced Photographic Studies” which is something we kinda made up.

  6. I have 6 more weeks of school. We just finished up all the 2nd and 3rd grade class concerts, now we have 4th and 5th.

    I teach a summer course but that’s 9-12 Monday-Thursday, so it’s a breeze. In August I have a 2 week course but that’ll be fun.

I personally can’t wait. Nothing like the last day of school!

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  7. Re: Yikes!

Oh it’s fun. I guess not everyone can work with kids, but I find it pretty easy.

This afternoon I have a rehearsal with these kids that are starting a rock band. They are all into it.

    It’s cool!

  8. Geez–

I’ve planned on getting certified to teach, as a supplement to my wildly-oscillating income, and as payback for my own gifts of knowledge, but after listening to you guys… I dunno anymore.

  9. Re: Geez–

Oh, it’s just the time of the year when we all get a little stir crazy. It’s not always this bad. You know what might make sense for you: to get certified teaching from “drawing on the right side of the brain” I have a friend who has a great job teaching that to folks at Pixar.

  10. free doughnuts and A’s for everybody!

That’s my standard suggestion to Steve. For some reason he doesn’t think it’s a good idea. ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. My body is sooo confused.

School year here starts in late Feb/early March. We finish one semester in mid-June, have 2 -3 months off, start another one in August/Sept, which ends at the end of November. This makes sense since the Oz summer is Dec-February.

My job is mostly research, but I love teaching and scarf up every opportunity I’m given. Currently one graduate class, going well, small but very good group. A couple who’ve no right to be there (poor writing, no engagement in class), but no one cares about my take on the matter. And it’s all pass-fail; I make a few students redo assignments but am loathe to tank them entirely–but it could happen.

So I’ve got 6 weeks to go. And one big paper from each student to read/mark at the end.

But I so completely love my job!

  14. I have no idea anymore – my stress level can handle only one day at a time, and even then…

Yet another case of plagiarism today, four separate papers from one student submitted on Tuesday. Oh, and expensive digicam equipment stolen from unlocked store room where it should not have been left. And an annoying symposium I have no desire to attend. Faculty observations tomorrow. Student evaluations on Monday. Bad, bad writing.

I need some rest and relaxation.

  15. I’m so “school busy”, I’m surprised I had this moment to respond…

Currently I’m embroiled in the Freshmen Foundation Show, which sums up the last semester’s worth of workshops. This is, quite naturally, supposed to be about the students but considering how the morning leg of clean-up/prep went this year, some faculty are determined to make it about their egos. Too many cooks in the kitchen can make the afternoon hanging process highly unpleasant. This year the individual who seems primed to cause the most problems also happens to be someone who has supplanted me for one of next year’s full-time foundation positions. Since I have little to lose (I’m definitely leaving, yo) the sparks are gonna fly if he becomes the slightest bit domineering…

After this weekend I have a lib arts drawing crit, wave of 40 final papers to grade and grade calculations before I can call the semester over.

Then in late May I have a two-week summer drawing workshop (big bucks but…ugh…18 students for 7 hours a day)…

  16. I’ve only got one class

(plus a couple other part-time jobs) and it kicked my ass this semester!

Turned in my final grades a week ago, deep into recovery this week.

Though now I’m spinning my wheels, like: what do I do now? Summer is scary.
