It can be a lousy week, but I’m willing to pause pushing the nuclear annihilation button because today I got to read Ernie Pook’s Comeek. New York papers are so stupid: they’ve driven almost every good cartoonist away from their pages. Thank goddess there’s an on line feed. Also right now I’m using iTunes to listen to Morning Becomes Eclectic from KCRW, a west coast station, so I guess Apple is ok too.
But just because I’m feeling slightly mellow doesn’t mean that I’m without crabbiness. Let me say here and now that Calvin And Hobbes is overrated.
Ernie Pook is fantastic. Fortunately, it runs every week in the Reader here in Chicago so I get to read it quite often. Until I move and I’m back to standbys like Andy Capp and Cathy which should lower my IQ a few points.
Gene went to college in LA…he always talked about how great Morning Becomes Eclectic was…we went to LA a couple of years ago and I finally got to listen to that show. LOVE IT!
Just a thought – Don’t you wish that Andy Capp was married to Cathy?
thanks for mentioning the station. I tuned in and have it playing. It’s making today’s work a little easier. New treats are always a good thing.
I want to see Andy and Florrie swinging with Leroy and Loretta….
Actually, I think Ziggy and Andy’s wife would make a more interesting couple.
Maybe, but when he’s good, he’s very, very good:
This was my favorite one thus far.
Very, very good.
Ew…
So wrong, and yet…so right! :-{Þ>

Do you remember the Pogo cartoon strips?
It was quite a shock to find out that Trent Lott had quoted Walt Kelley’s Pogo in reference to the secret torture camps leak: “We have met the enemy and he is us.”. A completely inappropriate use. Some of the phrases from Pogo are still part our home talk.
scanned scene from a long running dispute over a cigar butt.
Nope – I’m gonna have to disagree with Nayland on this one. C&H is absolutely NOT overrated.
Re: It had cigar smoking crossdressing furries
I used to recite a popular Pogo song as a child, which i *still* remember to this day:
Deck us all with Boston Charlie
Walla Walla, Wash, and Kalamazoo!
Nora’s freezin’ on the trolley…..
Re: It had cigar smoking crossdressing furries
How wnderful! I never knew the carol caught on. Did you pick it up from the animated special? I’ve never seen it.
The strip sometimes ran a second carol
Good King Sauerkraut looked out
On the streets uneven…
O just see that as spousal abuse waiting to happen. Tho i am not sure who would be the abuse
Re: It had cigar smoking crossdressing furries
He he I have a pogo book somewhere if it didnt disintigrate that has that song, kinda my cartoon bible growing up
You want overrated? I’ll tell you overrated:
Bloom County/Outland/Opus
I wish Lynda’s books Down the Street and The Fun House were still in print. She’s my idol when it comes to capturing the subtleties of childhood inner life.
I often agree with you about Calvin And Hobbes, but sometimes it is inspired…
